Speech
Inauguration Ceremony for Governor Wesley Simina, Chuuk State
US Embassy Kolonia Deputy Chief of Mission William “Doug” Douglass
Thursday, July 2, 2009 — Chuuk Lagoon, Weno, Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia
Governor and Mrs. Simina, Secretary Robert, Chuuk State and National Government Officials, Governor Anefal, Governor Ehsa, members of the Diplomatic Corps, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen.
It’s an honor for me to be here today. This is my first real visit to Chuuk and I must say, the hospitality has been terrific. The warmth and friendliness of the Chuukese people was something I noticed right away, just after I took a look at the natural beauty that is all around me here in Chuuk Lagoon. Governor, not only would I like to congratulate you for your inauguration, I would also like to congratulate you for living in such a magical place.
The inauguration ceremony I witnessed today showed me that the Chuukese people have an exuberance and a love of life that seems rare on the planet Earth these days. A similar event in the U.S. would be mostly just a few boring speeches, but here I saw dancing, singing, smiles, and laughter. Frankly, I prefer the Chuukese way. For what is an inauguration after a popular election but the affirmation of the democratic process? It should be celebrated, not just acknowledged. The Federated States of Micronesia may have a short history, but it is developing a strong tradition of democracy, freedom of speech, and freedom from oppression. If that’s not a reason to sing, dance, smile, and laugh I don’t know what is.
Governor, I’m sure I can speak for my diplomatic colleagues, Mr. Qin of the Chinese Embassy and Ms. Harada of the Japanese Embassy, when I say not only congratulations to you, but to all the people of Chuuk.
May you and your state continue on the path to peace, development, and opportunity for all. Thank you and best of luck.
