September 21, 2009
On September 18th, the U.S. Embassy in Kolonia donated over $2400 worth of computer and photography equipment to Kaselehlie Press Editor Bill Jaynes. The donation was part of a U.S. government grant to enhance local media. The Kaselehlie Press received a desktop computer with a memory upgrade kit, 2 tera bite hard drive, 30” computer screen capable of displaying a full-spread newspaper, telephoto lens and lens hood. Mr. Jaynes expressed appreciation not only for the enhanced capabilities, but also for the time and effort the new equipment would save him and his staff.
Other grant recipients included V6AF Pohnpei Baptist Radio Station Operator Dave Arthurs, who was awarded a $1,000 grant to purchase a laptop computer, a small mixer, and two wireless microphones. Mr. Arthurs explained that such portable equipment would enable him to conduct radio interviews while he is away from the V6AF Station in Nan Pohn Mal.
Grants were available for equipment purchase, travel for coverage of off-island events, or other activities that promoted the dissemination of news to the local community.
