U.S. to Test Medical Disaster Relief Unit in Chuuk
August 28, 2009
The United States Embassy, in coordination with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United States Air Force Humanitarian Assistance Rapid Response Team (HARRT), will demonstrate its medical disaster relief capability by erecting a mobile hospital unit in Chuuk on September 2-7, 2009. This mobile hospital unit is designed to augment and assist any local hospital, and it could be deployed during recovery from a disaster incident when requested by USAID through the U.S. Embassy.
Under the Amended Compact of Free Association, USAID is now responsible for disaster mitigation and assistance, coordinating the United States Government response to declared disasters in the Federated States of Micronesia. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and U.S. Department of Defense are strong partners under the USAID umbrella.
